Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is a combination of two active ingredients used to treat bacterial infections. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic that belongs to the penicillin group of antibiotics. It works by interfering with the cell wall synthesis of bacteria, leading to their death. Clavulanate potassium, on the other hand, is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that helps to protect amoxicillin from being destroyed by certain types of bacteria that produce beta-lactamase enzymes. This combination medication is commonly known as Augmentin.
